Songs for Ukriaine-Songs from Kharkiv
February 27, 2022 Church of our Savior, Mount Auburn
Ben Flanders-baritone with Sam Martin-piano
These songs are presented as an expression of love and support for the Ukrainian people as a whole and for the many friends and family members who have given me so much joy and taught me so much over the years. My life would be a darker place without you.Ukraine is a free and democratic nation being invaded by the Russian Federation.
Please donate to Ukraine, join a march, talk to friends and family about why Ukraine matters. Please do not lose hope, if all of us do one small thing we can move mountains. Please-do one small thing. That’s all it takes.
Slavic Voices presents:
Far From Home
Ben Flanders-Baritone
Michael Delfin-Piano
The keystone of this program is Rachmaninoff’s B-minor prelude, which was inspired by the longing for home implied by Arnold Böcklin's painting "The Homecoming". The irony is that after the Russian Revolution, Rachmaninoff fled the turmoil in Russia never to return. He composed over seventy songs before he left his homeland, but never again combined his music and his native language in song. This creative energy that grows out of our culture and the culture of our forebears, and the yearning for a return to one’s native soil, even though it may be impossible, is what this concert is all about. Baritone Ben Flanders and pianist Michael Delfin bring you a curated collection of songs by Sviridov, Rachmaninoff and Mussorgsky, concluding with Mussorgsky's magnificent "Songs and Dances of Death". Admission is free, but we ask that you pre-register by clicking on this link. https://forms.gle/4GUNCdvkgweKJ5BH8

Slavic Voices In Concert
Slavic Voices presents a special concert and livestream with founder and artistic director Ben Flanders and pianist Elena Kholodova. (whom Menton’s French magazine called “the brilliant Russian pianist, who impressed the audience with the beauty of the sound and amazing technique.”) Featuring music by Russian composers Rachmaninoff and Sviridov, this concert is a meditation on themes of traveling far from home with homesickness, and the universal feelings of alienation that we feel when we are transplanted from our native soil. Admission is free with a suggested donation to support Slavic Voices mission of creating bridges between cultures, raising awareness of Eastern European perspectives, and educating singers and audiences about Slavic languages and cultures. (Slavic Voices, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) organization, donations are tax-deductible).
Free parking is available at the 4th street garage. Enter the cathedral through the 4th street entrance and ask at the desk for a parking validation.
